1. Wer bist Du? Beschreibe Dich doch mal in drei Sätzen.

5. Warum passen unsere Stücke so gut in Euren Weltladen?
So geht Fairer Handel!

Together with the aid organization EBM INTERNATIONAL we want the region Making extreme north in Cameroon "greener" in the Sahel zone. With the expansion of the Sahara desert, usable soil, which is vital for agriculture and humans, is disappearing. The "Sahel Vert" project, which counteracts this and plants trees, has existed for over 40 years. Together with you and your support, we would like to make a contribution ❣️ How does that work?
When you buy a product from us, a € 1 donation goes to EBM INTERNATIONAL, which is used for the seedlings to plant the trees. In short:
BUY 1 PRODUCT = DONATION 1 € TO EBM INTERNATIONAL = PLANT 1 TREE IN THE SAHEL ZONE
You can find more information about Sahel Vert and EBM INTERNATIONAL here.
Would you like to plant your tree or several trees at the same time? Then let's go >> Take me to the shop 🛍️]]>
"In an interview with" Matze we talk about EBM, projects that are close to our hearts and how Corona is changing us all.
1. Who are you? Describe yourself in three sentences.
Matzo: As already written, most of them call me Matze and not Matthias. I think that's a good thing. A “young charter aunt” once baptized me like this as a child and it stayed that way. I am husband and father of two children, I enjoy jogging and I like music, good wine and books with inspiring content.
2. How did you come to EBM INTERNATIONAL?
Matzo: In 2005 my wife read in the prayer requests on the website of EBM INTERNATIONAL at the time that someone was wanted for HIV and AIDS work in South Africa. We wanted to reorient ourselves together and actually knew pretty quickly that this would be the new path. It was indeed a calling, and in parts it still is. Reconciliation work and commitment to the marginalized is important to us.
3. What excites you about PEARLS OF AFRICA?
Matzo: To be honest: I am particularly enthusiastic about Ulla and Dieter. I think it's impressive that they started it and pulled it off and made it big for so long. The two could "only" take care of themselves. That would be ok too. And the jewelry inspires me: I already knew it from people from projects in South Africa who live with HIV and AIDS and do this creative work with paper. But the quality of the pieces from the Emmanuel Group are simply a really different and high quality product. And here, too, all brochures certainly have their share.
4. What do EBM International and PEARLS OF AFRICA have in common?
Matzo: I would say: history, respect and friendship. Broochs know from their time as a missionary, like many of us here, that everything that glitters is never gold when we work together internationally and in a multicultural way. If you manage to look each other in the eye and show respect, you have gained a lot. I think that's what we all stand for together.
5. What is particularly important to you about a collaboration like ours?
Matzo: Many buzzwords have already been mentioned: “Beauty” is important here. The jewelry puts a smile on people's faces. That connects them with EBM INTERNATIONAL and God's mission. Finally our faith is not dusty and in need of explanation. That's wonderful.
6. Which piece of jewelery (product) is your absolute favorite?
Matzo: I'm very nostalgic about that and take the "long reggae chain". Such a chain was the first product that I held in my hands. And I liked the fact that (probably more) a woman can put it around her neck several times. Today I like the “Miriam Makeba paper bracelet” the most. Cool that they're named after this South African icon of freedom.
7. Which 3 of your projects are most important to you?
Matzo: I am very pleased that our social centers will continue to benefit from the cooperation. We have a lot of projects for children at risk, but the three social centers in Brazil are something special. In Diadema, Ijui and Cotia, hundreds of children and their families are cared for and have the chance to gain good prospects for their lives and to escape problems "off the street".
8. Now butter for the fish: How many donations did our collaboration bring together and in which of your projects did it flow?
Matzo: With almost 400 orders, over 60,000 euros were donated to EBM INTERNATIONAL. We have supported projects in Africa where women are promoted. For example the Maison Dorcas in the Central African Republic. Little is known in Germany about the country east of Cameroon. But it has been one of the poorest countries in the world for decades. In the Maison Dorcas project, up to 135 women are being trained as tailors at two locations. With our help we get some scholarships, we have already bought sewing machines for training and ensure that Anne Moussa, a highly qualified woman from the country, can be employed and retained as a project manager. Retaining skilled workers is one of the core challenges in order to provide sustainable help.
9. What did you take with you from 2020 until now, the corona year?
Matzo: It is my great resolve to be gracious to others and to myself. Unfortunately, I don't always succeed, but I think it's so important. Have mercy on my children who are at home instead of going to school - with their teachers who are having a hard time. It's good to talk about people in politics who are also allowed to make mistakes. Endure disagreements. And I wish each other more compassion: I can hardly imagine anything worse than losing someone without being able to hug him or her again. In all honesty: I find it difficult to wrest anything positive from this pandemic. I don't even like the digitization that comes with it.
10. What would you like to give the readers?
Matzo: Be merciful as your Heavenly Father is merciful. This annual motto sums up a lot. For me: God is a good father for EVERYONE. Especially for those who didn't have one themselves. And he's basically merciful. This is a good basis for a relationship.
At this point, a big thank you for your time and answers to our questions, dear Matze.
If you now want to actively support EBM International and donate to the wonderful children's projects in Latin America, then simply enter the code EBM in your delivery address when placing your order and you have already actively donated 25% of the purchase price of your order!

Vicci in front of your NOA NOA boutique in Hanover
Suddenly I see a new message on Instagram. This is Vicci. she is Boutique owner of NOA NOA in Hanover and would like to include our jewelry in your range. Shortly afterwards we phone, discuss the details and a week later they are selected pieces (on commission) in their shop window.
Although we “only” know each other via Instagram and by phone, a cordial bond has already formed. Vicci is warm, open and delightful. They are Moments that make a partnership-based collaboration valuable.
Now in With regard to Corona and the temporary closings of shops, we ask ourselves how "one" Vicci is doing. Against this background, the idea "In the interview with: 10 questions for" arose. And as was to be expected, I didn't have to persuade Vicci for long, she was immediately enthusiastic about the idea.
So, let's go: Dear Vicci ...
1. Who are you? Describe yourself in three sentences.
Vicci: Emotional streak, a gut person. I can't get it down so quickly, love for things that tell a story. Stay true to yourself. Solution-oriented. In many things I make gut decisions and I love things that tell a story. I can't get it down so quickly, I am enthusiastic about new and beautiful projects, I like to try things out and I like to work in a solution-oriented manner.
Vicci in your NOA NOA boutique in Hanover
2. How did you come across PEARLS OF AFRICA?
Vicci: Through an article on the Internet. I just don't know when and where, unfortunately it was a while ago ...;)
3. Why do NOA NOA and PEARLS OF AFRICA go so well together?
Vicci: Women and children are generally still disadvantaged. We support projects of disadvantaged women and children in order to give them the possibility of self-determination. Pearls of Africa is an exciting project and we would like to do our part.
4. Which of our pieces of jewelery is best received by your customers?
Vicci: This is individual, just like every part of Pearls of Africa is unique. :-)
5. Which one of our jewels is your absolute favorite and why?
Vicci: The beautiful Hoop earrings with filigree, twisted pearls. They are trendy and made from recycled paper.
6. What do you enjoy most about working in your boutique and how do you stay in contact with your customers in times of Corona?
Vicci: Decorate and create an oasis of well-being in the shop again and again, and laugh together with our customers. The love for the store is when you grow together with it and the customers feel at home and tell you, I'll be happy to come back. In Corona times, we are still there for our customers. You are welcome to pre-order, pick up or have it delivered by call or Click & Collect. We regularly post our nice articles on Instagram and Facebook - and decorate our windows with nice things.
7. Which 3 criteria do you pay attention to the most in the products that you offer your customers?
Vicci:
8. Why did you found NOA NOA?
Vicci: NOA NOA has been a franchise since 1981. I actually discovered my love for NOA NOA in 2003 in the first small NOA NOA boutique in Hanover, the concept (with the enchanting collection) exactly matched my expectations. My official journey with NOA NOA began in 2008, and then in 2016 on my own. In the course of time, the store has continued to develop individually, with one or the other joining in.
9. Which 3 insights did you take with you from 2020, the beginning of Corona?
Vicci:
10. What do you wish our readers?
Vicci: Above all, health and well-being and a love of individuality.
_____________________________________
We think these are nice and loving words at the end that we can only agree with and thank our interview partner.
Dear readers, even if we can't stroll into Vicci's boutique or the Fairtrade weekly market, we have the ingenious opportunity to do so conscious, digital shopping that does good. So let's celebrate because as Vicci says: Creativity and perseverance are more in demand than ever.
And so you will receive from us immediately 3 shopping links, who invite you to a fair shop from NOA NOA and our PEARLS OF AFRICA:
It is always exciting when ordered goods from deepest Africa are delivered to us in the tranquil town of Gronenberg in Schleswig-Holstein. Because you never really know what to expect - sometimes small cockroaches travel with you, but otherwise we never know 100% whether the order actually corresponds to what has been placed. It always depends on the recycled paper that the producers have available. Women in Africa also have their own designs and the freedom to try out new product ideas, because that's how free they are. This is important to us in our cooperation.
As it had rained a lot in Entebbe, the total of 21 packages had to be covered with foil. So completely intact, they don't arrive here. Many a beautiful recycling plate was damaged by the transport ... But the new bowls are unbelievably beautiful, and the new bracelets and chains only. Wow!
Brand new in the range are our paper cups, which can be used for pens and kullis, for example, or the thalers, which can be used as pendants for chains.
So, as the title suggests, it is exciting every time we open a box and the surprise leaps towards us :)
But convince yourself:
If you are as curious as we are and would like to browse a little, then take a look at our shop now! >> To the shop!
Oh, this time there was actually no cockroach in the luggage ...
]]>Everything has been shut down for a few months. Just like with us in Germany, when it crept over us and then stood tough in front of us: the lock-down. This is only known from sci-fi thrillers. What is actually happening here? You could say that everything changed overnight. Some recognized it faster than others. Others still don't realize it. We can be happy that the change "still" feels good in Germany. We have a good security system. Few of them live from hand to mouth.
It looks different in Uganda. Most live from hand to mouth. You lose almost everything and literally fight for survival. The people and our producers can hardly move freely in Kampala anymore. Nothing works anymore. The city's daily noise level disappears. There are hardly any buses or bodabodas left. The shops and institutions such as supermarkets, bars and restaurants, tourist information offices, schools or beaches are closing, the government is hanging out the state of emergency, or must, because otherwise the disaster will be unstoppable.
The lock-down hit our producers hard. You feel bad. Few can prepare themselves and their children three meals a day.
Some stayed in their quarters, Banda B1 Acholi, in Kireka (Kampala) and tried to stay afloat. For a few shillings they work in the quarry, sort beans, sell bananas on the roadside, collect empty returnable bottles or wash clothes from wealthy residents. Few of them take their families back to their villages using the limited public transport.
In our pictures we see, for example, Hellen and Barbara with their family. They currently live in the village of Lela Obaro and work their little "field".
In the meantime, the situation has calmed down and vital stores such as supermarkets and a few schools have also been reopened in Uganda under strict precautionary SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures). A few children from some producers are allowed to go back to school. Of course, hospitals were and still are accessible!
And the paper works? The production of paper and paper decorations was slowly resumed thanks to the shops, some of which were open. However, this does not take place in a group, rather the producers work at a distance from each other in their own four walls. A piece back to "normality" ...
>> Learn our Producers know.
"In an interview with" you we talk about the German-African upcycling jewelry project and your commitment to 60 refugee women. In addition, she will tell us your favorite product ...
Stefanie Behrens on the sale of upcycling jewelry from PEARLS OF AFRICA
Stefanie, who are you? Describe yourself in three sentences.
Stefanie: I am Steffi, 50 years old (over 30), cheerful, northern German, Christian, married to my childhood sweetheart Christian for 30 years, and I have two great adult student sons :-)
How did you come to the EBM and PEARLS OF AFRICA (POA)?
Stefanie: I belong to our community in Kiel-Heikendorf, which supports the EBM in its activities for the external mission. In the EBM magazine I read that volunteers were wanted who would like and enjoy selling POA jewelry within their community, whose sales proceeds will benefit the EBM and POA in equal parts. I thought that was great. We have ordered a product package directly on commission. The colorful pieces of jewelery immediately inspired me.
What do you love about the PEARLS OF AFRICA project?
Stefanie: Clearly the tasteful, colorful variety of sustainable handicraft products. Then that I can be sure that the money will really reach the women and their families in Uganda and EBM projects. And last but not least, that I can organize my voluntary work at POA as my time allows: can do a lot, nothing has to ...
What do you enjoy most when you are traveling for PEARLS OF AFRICA?
Stefanie: When I experience that the buyers are just as enthusiastic and fascinated by the beautiful material and colors as I am, then my heart opens up.
Which event in connection with the project do you still fondly remember today?
Stefanie: When I opened the first package from POA (the above consignment goods) at our church Christmas party and an immediate rush for the incredibly fantastic goods began. That was thrilling and absolutely motivating.
Which piece of jewelry is your absolute favorite?
Stefanie: The pearl necklace LUPITA (see Stefanie right picture)
What do you do full-time and in your free time?
Stefanie: I now work as a mini-jobber in the medical field. This gives me volunteer time for church work and the POA project. I enjoy gardening and love Christian novels by Tamera Alexander and Lynn Austin.
Finally, what would you like to give the readers and interested parties?
Stefanie: Just order a commission package! Offer the products e.g. at the next women's breakfast, at work, after the service or at the community book table. There are opportunities everywhere. It's really fun when your own joy in the jewelery spreads to others!
If the spark has jumped over with you and you feel like setting new standards with African pearls, then just get in touch with us. We look forward to you.
